MORE INFO:

TheatreOne’s Fringe Flicks presents a diverse line up of international, award-winning films in the final half of the season, starting with the gently humanist story of an unassuming housewife who comes to  recognize her unspoken hopes and dreams through the unlikely avenue of competitive jigsaw-puzzling, in Puzzle (January 20-21).

Following that on February 17-18 is Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace, which tells the intimate and complex coming-of-age story of a father and daughter struggling to maintain their unconventional lifestyle in the rugged countryside of the US Pacific Northwest.

To lighten the mood with some laughs on March 10-11, is Nothing Like A Dame, a documentary featuring esteemed acting icons Dames Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith, as they get together over a cup of tea and reminisce about their long friendship, their illustrious careers, acting for the stage and the camera, and life in general. It’s uproariously funny, candid, and utterly irresistible.

On March 24-25, take a trip to Lebanon with Nadine Labaki’s newest feature film, Capernaum, about a young boy named Zain who has seen enough of this life to resent his very existence. Encouraged by a current affairs program seeking to draw attention to child poverty, Zain files a lawsuit against his parents for giving birth to him. The trial provides the frame through which Zain’s story unfolds.

The Silent Revolution on April 7/8 takes us back to 1956, East Germany, when a group of senior high schoolers demonstrate solidarity with recent victims of the Hungarian Revolution by observing a minute of silence. Their brief, silent protest ignites underlying tensions and leads to grave consequences.

To close the 2018-19 season on May 5/6 is Woman at War, about Halla, a committed undercover eco-terrorist trying to save Iceland’s natural landscapes from industrialist destruction. When a long-desired child becomes available for adoption, she must choose between the greater good and her own dreams. Halla soon becomes the scourge of the aluminum industry and is determined to see things through… but she can’t help wondering, if it would be more fulfilling to save hypothetical future lives or one actual life: the daughter she has yet to meet and may never if she’s apprehended.

Tickets are $13 each or only $67 for all six films from theatreone.org and 250-754-7587.
